Crystal Ball

Crystal Ball

When I listened to the Funhouse album, the whole thing was, well, completely P!nk. Some songs were just so fun even though the meaning and subject matter was so serious, and some of those songs just made me want to cry (and I probably would have if I cried more easily or were at a more vulnerable point in my life). It's a fantastic break-up album, but I enjoyed it as someone happily in a relationship because, really, who doesn't know what heartbreak feels like? I feel like if you pair P!nk's Funhouse album with Adele's "Someone Like You" (well, actually, most of the 21 album) and Daughtry's "Over You," and you have the perfect collection of songs for a break up.

Anyway, out of all of those beautiful songs, "Crystal Ball" is the one that stuck out to me the most, and it still holds a special part of my heart, even though I have discovered the beauty in a lot of other songs. (I actually think the song with the most raw emotion behind it is "Mean." I can literally hear the anguish in her voice as she sings that song, and its so sad and so beautiful.) But the point of this post is "Crystal Ball." I think what really got me is its incredible simplicity and how low key it really is while the lyrics are so beautiful. Then I watched a video on youtube with P!nk explaining meanings behind songs, and she was talking about how pure that song actually is-it was recorded in one go, and that was it, and it made it all the more beautiful to me.

Too many artists have lost sight of what music really is and mess with their songs entirely too much. Lady Gaga is a prime example. I absolutely adore what she's trying to say in most of her songs, and I love her voice, and when she sings with just her and a piano, it's wonderful, but her albums are so overproduced that it starts to overshadow the voice and the message, and it makes me sad. Organic is, in fact, a good thing.
